A different way
to discover China

We started KAIXUAN International because we believed there was a better way to travel. Eight years and 4,900 travellers later, that belief has not changed.

The short version

It started with
a question

Before founding KAIXUAN International, our founder spent six years guiding coach tours across China. Day after day, the schedule was already decided: two hours at a jade factory, forty minutes at the Great Wall, a quick photo stop, then back on the bus.

Every destination had a time limit, every moment had a schedule, and every traveler was expected to follow the same route. Somewhere along the way, one important thing was missing — the freedom to truly experience a place.

What if a journey could be built around the traveler, rather than the timetable?

That question became the beginning of KAIXUAN International.

How we work

More than a tour.
A personal journey.

Instead of large tour groups, we chose a more personal approach: one guide, one private vehicle, and one group of travelers. No unnecessary shopping stops. No rushing through destinations to keep the schedule. No treating travel as a checklist of places to visit.

Today we run 12 carefully developed routes, alongside a growing collection of tailor-made itineraries built around each traveler’s interests. Walking through ancient streets, finding the local restaurant nobody writes about, or staying a little longer somewhere that captures you — the best moments are often the ones that cannot be planned in advance.

That is why flexibility sits at the heart of everything we do.

People make the journey

A few of our guides

Forty-five licensed guides across eight regions. Every one is professionally licensed, paid above the local market rate, and selected by us in person — we do not assign whoever happens to be available that morning. These three have been with us the longest.

LW
Li Wei Beijing · 7 years

History graduate, spent four years in the Forbidden City archives. Will tell you which hall the emperor actually slept in, and why the roof figures are numbered the way they are.

CY
Chen Yu Xi'an · 6 years

Trained as a calligrapher before guiding. Runs the workshop on our city culture tour and has never once let a guest leave with bad brush grip.

ZH
Zhang Hao Chengdu · 5 years

Knows the panda base keepers by name and the exact minute the cubs get let out. Also the person to ask about which hotpot place will actually hurt.

Questions

Before you book

If yours is not here, message us on WhatsApp — a planner answers, not a bot.

Are the tours really private?

Yes, on every route marked "Private · 1–6 guests". The guide and the car are yours for the day and nobody else joins. The only shared product in our catalogue is the Sichuan opera evening, which is a theatre seat rather than a guided tour, and it is labelled as such.

What happens if my plans change?

Free cancellation up to 48 hours before the tour start time, refunded to the original payment method within five business days. Inside 48 hours we will reschedule to another date at no cost where availability allows; otherwise the first day is charged.

Do you collect us from the airport or hotel?

Hotel pickup and drop-off inside the city ring is included in every private tour. Airport transfers can be added for a flat fee — mention your flight number when you book and we will track it.

Are tickets included in the price?

All entrance tickets listed on the itinerary are included, including timed-entry slots where the site requires them. Anything under "Not included" on the tour page is genuinely not covered — we list it rather than surprise you at the gate.

Can you handle dietary requirements?

Yes. Vegetarian, vegan, halal, gluten-free and nut allergies are all workable — note it at checkout and the guide will confirm the restaurant the day before. Our Chengdu and Chongqing routes can dial the spice down as far as you like.

How do I pay?

Card (Visa, Mastercard, Amex) or PayPal at checkout, in US dollars. For groups of six or more we also accept bank transfer with a 30% deposit. You receive a receipt immediately and a voucher once the guide is assigned.

What if it rains?

China's weather is seasonal, not catastrophic. Guides carry ponchos and adjust the order of stops to keep you indoors during the worst of it. If a site closes for safety reasons we substitute an equivalent and refund any ticket difference.

Our promise

We don’t measure a journey by how many places you visit

We started KAIXUAN International because we believed there was a better way to travel. Eight years later, that belief remains unchanged. We measure a successful journey by how much you take away from each experience, not by how many pins you drop on a map.
